Quick answer: Carbosol 450mg (carboplatin) is a platinum chemotherapy for ovarian cancer and small cell lung cancer, and doctors often combine it with other cancer medicines. Hospital staff give it as a short drip into a vein. MedHub supplies it on prescription and delivers it to patients and hospitals across Pakistan.

For patients and families

What is Carbosol 450mg?

Carbosol 450mg is a 45ml vial of carboplatin solution made in Pakistan by Pharmasol. Carboplatin contains platinum. Once inside a cancer cell, it binds to the cell’s DNA and links the strands together, so the cell can no longer copy its genes or divide. Healthy cells that divide quickly, such as those in the bone marrow, feel some of this effect too, which explains many of the side effects.

This is a large vial. Many adult doses fall in this range, which often means a single vial is enough for one treatment.

What is it used for?

  • Ovarian cancer: epithelial ovarian cancer, as part of the first treatment after surgery and again if the cancer returns.
  • Small cell lung cancer: usually given with another chemotherapy medicine.

Cancer teams also build carboplatin into combination plans for other solid tumours. Your oncologist explains why it has been chosen for you.

How is it given?

A nurse gives Carbosol 450mg as a drip into a vein, usually lasting 15 to 60 minutes, in a hospital or chemotherapy day unit. Anti-sickness medicine normally comes beforehand. Your doctor decides the dose, using your kidney function and sometimes your body size, and sets the gap between treatments, which is usually about four weeks.

Common side effects

  • A fall in platelets, white cells and red cells, with easy bruising, infections or tiredness
  • Nausea and vomiting in the first day or two
  • Low magnesium, potassium or calcium on blood tests
  • Ringing in the ears or changes in hearing
  • Allergic reactions, more likely after several courses

Contact your oncology team straight away if you develop a fever, bleeding gums or nosebleeds, black stools, severe vomiting, or itching, flushing and breathlessness during the infusion.

Storage

Store below 25°C, in the original carton so light cannot reach the solution. Do not refrigerate or freeze it. The hospital pharmacy prepares the drip for you.

Families in the UAE, UK and Saudi Arabia often arrange Carbosol 450mg for a parent’s chemotherapy in Pakistan. Carboplatin is commonly given with Petaxel 300mg/50ml (paclitaxel). For other platinum treatment see Cispatin 50mg/50ml (cisplatin), or view all oncology medicines.

For healthcare professionals

  • Composition: carboplatin 450 mg/45 ml (10 mg/ml) concentrate for solution for infusion
  • Drug class: platinum-containing alkylating-like antineoplastic
  • Indications: advanced ovarian carcinoma of epithelial origin, first line and second line; small cell carcinoma of the lung
  • Mechanism: forms intrastrand and interstrand DNA cross-links, inhibiting DNA synthesis and causing cell death
  • Label dose: 400 mg/m² as a single IV infusion over 15–60 minutes in previously untreated adults with normal renal function, not repeated within 4 weeks; alternatively dose by the Calvert formula, dose (mg) = target AUC × (GFR + 25); reduce the dose by 20–25% in heavily pretreated patients and in renal impairment
  • Monitoring / key precautions: full blood count before each course and weekly, with nadir around day 21; renal function, electrolytes and hearing; contraindicated in severe renal impairment, severe bone marrow depression, bleeding tumours and known platinum allergy; risk of hypersensitivity rises with repeated exposure; do not use aluminium-containing needles or sets; emetogenic, so give antiemetic cover; avoid in pregnancy
  • Storage: below 25°C, protected from light
  • Manufactured and marketed in Pakistan by: Pharmasol (Pvt) Ltd
