Quick answer: Petaxel 300mg (paclitaxel) is a taxane chemotherapy used for breast, ovarian and non-small cell lung cancer, and for AIDS-related Kaposi’s sarcoma. A nurse gives it as an infusion into a vein in hospital. MedHub supplies it on prescription and delivers it to hospitals and homes across Pakistan.

For patients and families

What is Petaxel 300mg?

Petaxel 300mg is a 50ml vial of paclitaxel concentrate made in Pakistan by Pharmasol. It is the larger of the two Petaxel vials and suits adults whose calculated dose is high. Paclitaxel comes originally from a compound found in the yew tree. It freezes the internal scaffolding that a cancer cell needs to split in two, so the cell cannot divide and eventually dies.

What is it used for?

Oncologists use paclitaxel for:

  • Ovarian cancer: first treatment together with cisplatin, and for disease that comes back after other chemotherapy.
  • Breast cancer: after surgery when lymph nodes are involved, for advanced disease after earlier chemotherapy, and with trastuzumab for HER2-positive cancer that has spread.
  • Non-small cell lung cancer: combined with cisplatin when surgery or radiotherapy is not an option.
  • Kaposi’s sarcoma linked to AIDS: after other treatment has not worked.

How is it given?

Petaxel 300mg goes into a vein through a special giving set with a filter, usually over a few hours, in a chemotherapy day unit. About half an hour before, the nurse gives medicines that lower the risk of an allergic reaction, often a steroid and antihistamines. Your doctor decides the dose, based on your height, weight and blood counts, and how often treatment repeats.

Common side effects

  • Hair loss across the scalp and body, which regrows after treatment
  • Numbness, tingling or burning in the fingers and toes
  • Aching muscles and joints two or three days after treatment
  • Low blood counts, raising the risk of infection
  • Nausea, diarrhoea and mouth soreness

Get help at once if you have a temperature of 38°C or above, shaking chills, chest tightness, wheezing or a rash during the drip, or a very slow or irregular heartbeat.

Storage

Store the vial below 25°C in its box to protect it from light. It does not need a fridge. Hospital pharmacies normally keep and prepare it.
