For patients and families

What is Gemita 1g?

Gemita 1g is a vial of gemcitabine powder, made by Fresenius Kabi and marketed in Pakistan by AJM Pharma. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analogue. Cancer cells mistake it for one of their own building blocks and use it when they copy their DNA, which stops them from dividing. The 1g vial holds one gram of medicine, enough for most adult doses.

What is it used for?

Oncologists use gemcitabine, alone or with other drugs, in several cancers:

  • Pancreatic cancer: locally advanced or spread disease.
  • Non-small cell lung cancer: often with cisplatin.
  • Bladder cancer: advanced disease, with cisplatin.
  • Breast cancer: with paclitaxel, after earlier chemotherapy.
  • Ovarian cancer: relapsed disease, with carboplatin.

Partner drugs in our range include Cispatin 50mg/50ml (cisplatin), Carbosol 450mg/45ml (carboplatin) and Petaxel 150mg/25ml (paclitaxel). You can also browse the full oncology category.

How is it given?

A nurse mixes the powder with saline and gives it as a drip over about half an hour, at a hospital or day-care unit. Most plans repeat the drip on set days of each cycle, with a rest week. Your doctor decides the dose from your height and weight, and checks your blood before each visit.

Common side effects

  • Low blood counts, which can cause infections, tiredness and bruising
  • Nausea and sometimes vomiting
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, aches and chills, in the first day or two
  • Mild rash and swollen ankles
  • Raised liver tests on blood work

Report breathlessness, a fever of 38°C or above, severe bleeding, a sudden rise in blood pressure with headache, or passing very little urine straight away.

Storage

Keep the unopened vial below 25°C in its carton. Do not put it in the fridge, because the solution can form crystals when it is cold. Hospital staff prepare it just before your infusion, so you rarely handle it yourself.
